What is Gurpurabs?
Gurpurab is the day when Sikhs get together as Sangat and remember their Gurus. They remember that particular event that took place on that day and get inspiration and teachings from that event. And Bhai Gurdas ji said that I’m a sacrifice to all those Gursikhs who get together on the day of Gurpurab with loving devotion. They remember the Gurus on that day, and they get together as Sangat; they do Seva together, and because of this, they get so many blessings from the Guru.
Historical Gurpurab events like Gurgadee Dihara, Parkash Dihara, Jyoti Jyot Dihara
You must know Gurgadee Dihara, Parkash Dihara, and other historical events. Parkash Dihara is the Birthday when a guru comes into this world. Jyoti Jyot Dihara is the day when the Guru leaves this world. Gurgadee Dihara is the day when the Guruship is passed on from one Guru to the next Guru. Apart from these, Sikhs also celebrate other historical events such as Shaheedi Dihara or Janam Devas of certain Gursikhs in their Panth.
History of Gurpurab
Celebrating Gurupurab is something that has yet to take place, you know, a decade ago or recently. Even during the times of the Guru, Gurupurab was celebrated. So we can see in the history of Sikhs that Guru Amar Das ji, after establishing Goindwal Sahib, got the six Sangat together in Goindwal Sahib on the day of Vaisakhi, and on this day, the Sangat will get together, they will do Darshan of Gurusaheb, they will listen to Katha and Kirtan and do Seva together. Imagine how much ananda the Sangat would be in.
Hukum Nama of Guru Har Gobind Sahibji related Gurpurab
We can see from the Hukam Namas written by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji that they address the Sangat and tell them to get together, celebrate Gurupurab, and do Seva together. Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj has written Hukam Namas calling the Sangat to Ananda Pur Sahib on the day of Diwali and getting the Sangat to come together and do darshan of the Guru. So we know from this that celebrating Gurupurab, getting together as Sangat, and doing seva on the day of Gurpurab is very important. It has been practiced since the time of the Guru and is still being practiced now as well.
Conclusion
Sikhs have their calendar called the Nanakshahi calendar. It helps them remember important events called Gurpurabs, like birthdays and passing days of their Gurus. During Gurpurabs, Sikhs come together, pray, and help others. This tradition started long ago and continues today because it’s essential to the Sikh community.
